Interval training for everyone

The New York times had an article the other day on the benefits of interval training. I know this is not news to you running experts, but it's good to see it mentioned in a general interest newspaper. One thing I got out of the Rogue classes I did over the past several years was how effective the combination of running and recovery (which for me is walking) can be. I now use a stopwatch and employ a run-walk regimen on the Town Lake trail.

nice, dan. long before i took up with Rogue, there was a brief stint in the mid-90's where i was actually running quite a bit. i thought i'd be able to do it, since i played 2-3 hours of hard basketball at least 3-4 nights a week.

the first day i went out to run at camp mabry's (or as i used to call it, camp maybe, as in "maybe i'll run, maybe i won't) mile track, it was mid-afternoon in july, and obviously, i couldn't even run a mile.

it was just intuitive at the time, but i started walking 3/4 of the track, then jog the last quarter. then walk the next 1/2, jog the last half. walk a quarter, jog 3/4. it didn't take long before i could string those intervals together into running six miles straight, and i felt i could have gone further.
